So many people complain and worry about the direction that their lives are taking. There is so much pressure to create the best life possible and to create it right now! I’m a victim of that nagging thought from time to time. With social media and the constant noise of filtered-picture-perfect perfection, it’s easy to feel inadequate.  We just never seem to be doing enough. The amount of opportunities available to us can be overwhelming.  I have a great paying steady job but wouldn’t I be better off with my own business? I have my own business but wouldn’t I be financially better off if I had a steady income? I have so much fun traveling but will I one day regret not building a “practical” career? There is this pressure to make the most use of our time. However, the time spent worrying about wasting time is actually time wasted. It happens to every single one of us. We all just want to feel important. We just want to be happy.

I have some good news: happiness comes in many forms and there’s enough of it to go around. I’ve done a fair amount of research on psychology, in regards to the social and career aspect of life, to know that many people worry about the same things. Since our very first day of school, most of us have been taught to strive for the best — find the single right answer. So it’s no surprise that we’ve become obsessed with finding the one right answer to a happy life. There is no such thing as one right answer to life. There are so many paths to take and we have the power to make any path work for us (we also have the choice to leave a path).

In order to make the most of your life each day, consider the following bullets bellow:

What would make you happy right now? My entire 20s has been a career obsession. I spend nearly every second of the day thinking about what looks good on paper, what would be a great move, what would make life better. I often get stuck between what would make me happy now and what I’m told would make me happy later. When I get into those moments, I take a deep breath and ask myself what would make me happy. When I satisfy my inner needs, I instantly feel much better. It gives me a clearer focus. Sometimes my answer will be something like “I would be happy if I didn’t stress over this one project/client/position/event;” I then take specific steps to change my current uncomfortable situation. Other times my answer will be “I want to make tacos and margaritas!” A totally unrelated solution to my issue but it makes me happy so I do it. Life is way more than just one aspect of our lives.

 

Do one thing different each day. Dissatisfaction can come from boredom. Break your routine by doing something new each day. Take a different route to work. Eat at a new restaurant. Workout at a different time or at a different place or even in a different way. I like to look for free and fun things going on in my city. I once joined a free improv class which was a lot of fun.

Learn something new. The mind is a sponge! Even if you hated school, you probably still loved to learn. It’s human nature to seek information (I know I’m not the only one who spends hours bouncing from one Wikipedia page to another).  Take a language course or cooking class. When we grow we feel much better. It’s never too late to learn something new.

Serving your community does everyone good. Not only will you feel a sense of true purpose, you will also be helping someone else have a better day. The world does not revolve around just one person. We must all share our knowledge, our resources and most importantly our hearts for a brighter future.

 

Talk to people. The best way to get out of your head is to go outside and meet someone! Get out there and socialize. Talk to anybody — not just strangers. Hit up an old friend. Hang out with your best friends. There is a reality greater than the one you live right now. Perspective is everything and a great key to bring yourself back down to earth. Talking to others helps you realize there is no absolute answer to happiness, problems don’t last forever, and life is better spent feeling good.
