People Aged 7 to 93 Give Life Advice to Younger Selves

Nothing will teach you like life can. We’ve all looked back and wish we could’ve warned, reassured, or saved our younger selves with words of wisdom. With time comes experience and with experience comes a greater sense of how to live our best lives.

In CBC Radio’s Wiretap’s farewell video “How to Age Gracefully,” several people, some as young as 7-years-old and as old as 93-years-old, offer words of advice to their younger counterparts.

My favorite words of wisdom:

“Dear 6-year-old, training wheels are for babies. Just let go already. Regards, a 7-year-old.”

“Dear 30-year-old, being a starving artist only works if you actually make art.”

“Dear 36-year-old, stop caring so much about what people think. They’re not thinking about you at all. Sincerely, a 47-year-old.”

“Dear 53-year old, it’s never too late to try something new.”

“Dear 72-year-old, – Spend all your money, or your kids will do it for you. Sincerely, an 85-year-old”

“Dear 85-year-old, indulge your sweet tooth. You’ll need dentures soon anyway.” (Ed’s note: I’m saying!)

“Don’t listen to other people’s advice. Nobody knows what the hell they’re doing. Sincerely, a 93-year-old”

Bonus: If I were to give advice to my early 20-something self, I’d say – Take the risk, you’re worth all the beautiful mistakes.

It’s a wonderful reminder that we never stop learning and we never stop growing. Even children are learning life lessons as they navigate childhood into adolescence. This whole thing called life is truly just a journey. May we remember to pick up those precious nuggets of wisdom on the way.
