Sanitary Pad Commercial Fat-Shames….and Period Shames

So yeah…in the weird world of weird commercials, one sanitary napkin brand attempts to be funny and “relatable”(?) by the use of fat-shaming and, strangely, period-shaming.

True story, women complain about our periods. Our menstrual cycle can do a number on our mind, body, and soul. We get cranky, some of us get cramps, sometimes we feel icky, and on the worst days we just feel plain ol’ horrible all together. Now while the monthly period may be the most annoying week, I don’t think Sofy Be Fresh captured the essence in the most non-offensive way. I mean, they could’ve held the fat-shame.

In the commercial above, a thin woman realizes her period is due. Upon realizing, she is met with her alter-ego, a heavier woman — which we are made to believe is a negative. The heavier alter-ego screams, cries and is completely unstable. Periods somehow makes us lose our shit in the most uncontrollable way ya’ll! At least, that is what Sofy Be Fresh tells us. Despite the exaggeration, I could probably find a chuckle or laugh within if only the fat-shaming wasn’t so glaring.

Never fear! The crazed plus-sized monster is left behind in despair as the thin main character drives away sitting safely in her Sofy Be Fresh pad. The message? Periods totally turn women into lunatics and being fat is totally not good!
Obviously, the feedback from consumers were anything but positive. Sanitary napkin commercials are notoriously bad — this is fact. I mean, who really inserts a tampon and proceeds to do gymnastics in a field of daisies? All period commercials are bad, but Sofy Be Fresh just took the entire PMS-craved cake.
