New Kickstarter to Unveil Rastafari Culture

In these virtually limitless times, we have the opportunity to explore the world and all of its culture — whether through travel or just a click of the mouse. While many of us are exposed to countless cultures throughout the world, rarely do most people take the time to actually explore the origins. One young NYC-based photographer, Justin J, plans to unearth the interesting and unknown roots in an independent documentary series titled, “Unveiling Culture.”  The first installation will explore one of the most misrepresented cultures, Rastafari.

Widely reduced to just Bob Marley and marijuana, Rastafari is a fairly young religion with principles much deeper than just music and grass. As a Jamaican descendant, I cringe at the stereotypes and the generalizations. There’s a huge misconception that all Jamaicans follow the Rastafari movement and an even bigger misconception of what the movement is really about.

The upcoming film, “Unveiling Culture: Rastafari,” takes place in Jamaica with some footage taken across the states. Viewers will follow Justin J’s journey as he uncovers the truth told by followers of the movement and debunks common misconceptions. The film has already taken motion with Justin’s recent trip to Jamaica. “During this trip, I was afforded and overwhelmed with an admittance into the beautiful culture. […] This is an independent, explorative documentary and photo project to exhibit the history, origin, spirit and essence of various cultures around the world. [I want] to bridge the gap of understanding between many cultures and their theological beliefs and practices, while also sharing the essence and beauty behind the cultures and their differences.”
