Is Kris Jenner a Feminist Role Model?

I hate the “is (female celebrity) a feminist?” debate. Who are we to decide whether or not someone is feminist enough? Especially if she already proclaimed herself to be one (I’m looking at you Beyonce haters).  Furthermore, despite the fact that celebrities do have much more influential power than you and I behind the keyboard, the famous folks really owe us nothing for our own personal causes and beliefs. Now, where does this leave my inquiring blog title? The question is not so much a literal one as it is just an observation based on current feminist culture. The minute a female celebrity displays girl-power or makes any acknowledgment about gender issues, she’s deemed a feminist (even if she never called herself that). Whether or not you like her, Kris Jenner is a powerhouse. The mother of six single-handedly  transformed her family into a multi-million dollar empire. Last night, the famous “momtrepreneur”  sat down with E!’s Giuliana Rancic for a Beyond Candid interview. As Jenner discussed motherhood, her failed marriages, and road to success, I realized that I’ve been right about Kris Jenner all along: she’s actually brilliant.

What may make Kris Jenner synonymous to feminism is the discourse over what feminism really is. Is it okay to be sexy and still be a feminist? Can I be a housewife and still be a feminist? The idea of what makes a “real feminist” or simply  a “real woman” is being challenged with each discussion.  Thanks to invigorating public conversations on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms, more people are becoming aware and more interested in social issues. Thus, the “F” word has become much more buzzy in the mainstream world. The image of feminism has changed from stereotypical man-bashing, sweater wearing, mustache donning ladies to what it actually is (and has always been) — conscious people who stand for equality and respect for all women.

Now, Kris Jenner may not have publicly declared herself as a feminist but I do think she is noteworthy when discussing strong influential women. Let’s just get this out of the way: Her daughter Kim Kardashian made a sex tape. Okay. But I do not believe the sex tape is the sole reason for the family’s success.  With all the celebrity sex tapes out there, who else has obtained the magnitude of success as Kardashian? According to Jenner’s Candid interview, her family’s famous reality show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” was only pitched to promote the Kardashian boutiques. I’m sure the notoriety surrounding the sex tape was the main reason the show got the green light. However, Jenner masterfully turned lemons into almost 10 years of multi-million dollar lemonade.

I shamelessly watch “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Rich people problems on film is prime entertainment (see: everything else we watch). However, I wouldn’t call myself a Kardashian fan. I don’t admire the family’s superficial nature. (Obviously, reality shows aren’t based on heavenly principles — neither is this article by the way).  What I do appreciate is how dominate these Kardashian-Jenner women are. Mama Jenner is not a submissive housewife. She’s a media mastermind who brilliantly brings her children’s (and her own) aspirations to life. Say what you want about her daughters’ dating habits but the Kardashian girls aren’t doing anything that a regular male celebrity doesn’t do. George Clooney can date a different woman each year and not get shamed for it. Okay, he’s married now but I guarantee if he divorced his wife after 72 days, we’d all move on without much comment.  I appreciate how unapologetic the Kardashians are about their sexuality and love life. Sure, no one is going to give them a gold medal for broadcasting their personal lives for all to see, but I can respect a lady who dates, marries and divorces whoever as she pleases. I can respect a woman who makes her happiness a priority despite the judgement.  I appreciate how irreverent the matriarch is when it comes to old school gender roles and expectations. Even as a newly divorcee, Jenner admits that she is optimistic about her love life. “I want to definitely be in love, I like being in love — there is no better feeling in the world,” the 58 year old mother told Rancic.

It may be a stretch to declare Kris Jenner a feminist role-model but I do think we have to acknowledge this woman’s greatness.
