Photographer Jason Setiawan Launches The Love Project

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, which means love is in the air. But for fashion photographer Jason Setiawan, V-Day is all year round.

Setiawan and I met years ago on a shoot and what left an impression on me was his incredibly kind heart and warm soul. We lost touch for a few years until I stumbled upon latest work: The Love Project. Launched on January 1st, the NYC-based photographer decided to make 2014 a  year of love.

“It started with a simple conversation I had with a friend,” Setiawan explained. “It was an idea of doing something that related to some sort of cause. I loved the idea of relating something with a cause, however a lot of the causes out there are focused on the negative things. They are great causes but they focus on the negative.”  It is true. Many of the most popular causes deal with fighting against something rather than glorifying something good.  Setiawan believes, “Love is something that is very positive.  I think we can have more love in the world. Everybody can benefit from that.”

Despite its powerful message,  The Love Project  is fairly simple in its execution. All it is is a collection of photos featuring people and their original quotes about love. The Love Project was originally meant to be a celebrity book about love; the campaign already includes snapshots of media notables like Siggy Flicker. However, Setiawan felt the concept was too great to be limited.  “I think this should be a platform that everyone can share love with the world. It doesn’t have to be in a book, it doesn’t have to be only people we know. It could be everyone. It should be everyone. I think we all can benefit from it.”

Paola Velasquez, Setiawan’s fiance and partner in the project, shares the same sentiment. “Little by little, we’ve been approached by people of other circles. It’s nice that the word is spreading so quickly. It just shows the power of love and how meaningful it’s been to people who have seen it.”

The most striking aspect of the The Love Project is the many different faces it features. The original quotes are also quite captivating. “By them writing out what love means to them, it will remind them of the love they already have that they may have forgotten,” Setiawan explained. When asked what love means to the two lovebirds behind the project, Setiawan said “Love is understanding and embracing our connection with the universe. Our oneness with all.” Velasquez added, “Love is endless. There is love everywhere.”
