Is the Afro Glamorous? Lupita Nyong’o and Other Stars Prove Yes

I remember a time when glamorous hairstyles were often considered for only straight hair types. For my prom, I had to have my hair slick back and in a tight high bun. I couldn’t attend any wedding or formal event without every kink straightened. Even as a child, my mother would press and curl my puffy afro into smooth delicate Shirley Temple curls. Our reference was the glamour we saw on television, on the red carpet and in the magazines. Cue the perm commercial with the ebony beauty running her fingers through her now bouncy relaxed and manageable hair before heading off to some grand event.

Luckily, the natural movement is back on the scene and is more embraced than ever before. Being nappy by nature is no more just a political or social statement, it’s a way of life. While the afro is now a common hairstyle for the artsy, hipstery, progressive, or boho types, from my experience and that of who I’ve encountered, natural hair women still shy away from sporting their coily locs for glamorous occasions. Braids and weaves are almost always installed for a fancy night out. I’m guilty of it.

It wasn’t until recently that many black celebrities returned to their roots and began rocking their curls on the red carpet for everyone to see. Gone are the days when all black starlets wore sleek long tresses. Gorgeous celebrities like Lupita Nyong’o, Solange Knowles and Viola Davis are leading the natural hair movement into glamour territory. For years, many black women believed black hair to be unmanageable when in fact it’s the opposite. Our hair can do whatever we want it to do. The hairstyle options are limitless! Check out the chic hairspirations from Hollywood’s dazzling natural hair beauties.
