BuzzFeed Asked Black People the Wrong Questions

BuzzFeed….WYD???

Some time ago, BuzzFeed posted a video called “Questions White People Have for Other White People.” The controversial video included questions about prejudice, racism, and other expected QTNAs. Obvi,  this immediately led to furious, ALL CAPS, angry emoji laced comments accusing BuzzFeed of “reverse-racism” and also several requests for a “blacks ask other blacks” video.  I giggled and was slightly intrigued, because I knew BuzzFeed would actually go for it. To no surprise, they did…but it went terribly wrong. So terribly, terribly wrong.

The video…

Sigh. The issue I have with this video is that most of these questions were lazy. They weren’t thought-provoking. They didn’t even make sense!

“Why are we more likely to get involved in a new dance trend than we are to get involved in politics or open a new business?”

Wait…so you’re saying I can’t nae nae AND vote?! Milly rock or MBA…you decide.

“Do you really believe that Black is beautiful or is that just something you say because it sounds cool?”

I mean….how could you even….like….huh???

“Why do we call each other the n-word but then get vehemently upset when a white person uses the n-word?”

I don’t use this word, for the record, but I mean, seriously…that’s your question?? You have no idea why it’s wild if a white person calls you a nigga/er??

Most of the questions have very obvious answers, by the way (See: systematic racism and white supremacy).

Also, A LOT of the questions were based on pathetic stereotypes. Do you really not know any black people who love anime? How is the black community singled out for homophobia when theres a binder full of white old guys creating anti-LGBT laws every damn day???

Of course, the all-powerful Black Twitter let BF have it and of course it was hilarious. See below:

Then spawned #RealQuestionsForBlackPeople

Back to the video — there were a few valid questions (I liked the question about mental health and interracial dating), but  it’s a shame that BuzzFeed missed a great opportunity to touch on something meaningful.

In conclusion, controversial =/= profound.
