Q&A with The Parlour Suite

SONY DSC

If you love new music, well then you’ve just stumbled upon a special treat. I introduce you to awesome indie band, The Parlour Suite. Hailing from Minneapolis, the trio takes traditional pop into cooler territory with their dark vibes, groovy synths and trippy vocals. Think Ellie Goulding meets Gotye meets The Free Design (old heads know) meets Sia meets Drake — obviously a seriously eclectic sound with the right amount of rhythm and a mass of meaningful lyrics. There’s nothing better than dancing your ass off to emo electronica; at least that’s how I like to spend my Friday nights. The Parlour Suite’s latest EP, “Pressure,” includes infectious beats and hooks that are sure to get stuck in your head. I spoke with one of the band’s lead vocalists, Inga Roberts, to get the all the deets on who they are. Check out our chat below.

Introduction: Who’s who?
Inga Roberts: Vocals, Synth
Joel Roberts: Vocals, Guitar
Joshua Caro: Drums

Tell me about the early times. How did you all come together?
Joel and I are married, and we’ve played music together for a while. When we formed The Parlour Suite, Joel was between bands…. and we just started writing. The music clicked. And we formed The Parlour Suite.

We’ve had a few arrangements of members. However, we have always kept it as simple as possible. When we are touring, it helps dynamically to be on the road with people that feel like family and have a mutual interest and respect for each other. We met Joshua Caro, when The Parlour Suite played a show with his band. We all hit it off right away. He came over to our place and started playing drum, adding in electronic loops and ambient aesthetics…we’ve played together ever since. We all get along really well and are open to each other with opinions and direction. As a group, we want the songs to be the best version of themselves, and each member adds an important dynamic.

What and/or who are your greatest influences?
I think most consistently we are influenced by changing things up. We don’t like monotonous predictability, so we are often changing up our live performance and song arrangements. Or even writing brand new songs at the last minute to add to the set. We love touring and performing, and I would say that also inspires us to write new material.

We all have individual musical influences but collectively for this project we draw from electronic sounds, R&B, and pop music.

Tell me about your new EP “Pressure.” How does it differ from your previous sound?
When we were writing “Pressure” we kept in mind what we wanted to play live — material that we would be excited to watch as an audience member.
We have a full length album recorded that is releasing later this year. The new album is quite different form our previous material… much darker and more R&B pop influences. So when we were picking out the songs to pair together for “Pressure,” our intention was to give a preview of “what’s to come”.

I really dig “In My Head!” What inspires the songwriting?
I wrote “In My Head” in 2013 the week before we left for SXSW! It was a last minute addition to the set. We were all in the mood for new material to perform at the festival. I had spent the morning watching old music videos and was craving some pop music. My friend had left his synth at our place, and as I was playing around with the low register tones… the song just came together. Vocally that song is really fun to perform because the range is so broad.

I like to keep my lyrics somewhat vague. They are usually about various subjects and experiences combined into one song. “In My Head” is vaguely about uncontrollable circumstances that propel and change you… The feelings of excitement and uncertainty that come with love, loss and distance.

We don’t have a specific formula for our writing, but that is the story about how “In My Head” came about.

If you could form your own fantasy band with any 3 musicians (dead or alive), who would be in it?
Ooh… I really love our 3 piece currently!
But if there was a dream group of three other musicians to collaborate with: Sia Furler, Freddie Mercury, and Solange Knowles.

What’s next for you?
In 2014 we’ll be spending time in LA working on some new writing projects… and getting set to release the full length follow up to “Pressure”. Additionally, we’ll be touring the West coast sporadically this summer!
