Kim Kardashian’s Booty Does Not Offend Me

Kim Kardashian’s ass broke the internet….again. This time it wasn’t because of her white swimsuit selfie; it was because of her latest glossy cover for Paper Magazine. The buxom celebrity stars in the mag’s winter issue flaunting some shiny cheeks. A more PG cover features Kim popping a bottle of champagne while balancing a glass on her ass. “#Breaktheinternet” was the caption for the photos and yet the Instagram response was underwhelming (for her at least…a measly hundred thousand within the first hour — meh), the cover sparked a wildfire discussion on race and the hypersexuality of black women.

The main argument: Kim Kardashian is appropriating the image black women (because booty). Number one, I need everyone to realize black women are more than just our bodies and sexuality. Number two, I need everyone to realize black women aren’t all shaped the same. Quiet as it’s kept, not all of us have big asses, huge boobs, full lips and thick thighs.  I understand curves are synonymous to our culture but to reduce black women to just big bottoms is dehumanizing.

The spread was shot by legendary photographer, Jean-Paul Goude — you may recognize his work with ex-girlfriend and fellow legend Grace Jones. Many are offended because one of the shots is a recreation of Goude’s iconic “Champagne Incident” photo which features black model Carolina Beaumont. In the original, Carolina is completely naked whereas Kim dons a elegant gown in the redo.

It’s a discourse worth having over why the black woman was more exposed. Personally, I don’t think it was white privilege that earned Kim to be clothed  — as we can see, she gives full moon in the other photo and there’s not much left to imagine about her body anyway. Goude fetishizes the black body no doubt.  His work can be seen as abstract or artsy, yes.  However, it wouldn’t be outrageous to call-out his objectification of black bodies. “Blacks are the premise of my work,” Goude told People magazine in 1979, “I have jungle fever.” I’m more interested in this discussion than how Kim Kardashian is “stealing” black culture.

The blame should not go to Kim. The argument should not be about her fake, injected, inflated, “real,” or whatever you believe it to be, ass. As I’ve said before, black women are incredibly sensitive — for good reason too. One thing I’ve realized when discussing race issues or other prejudices, many times it is the minority who is capable of seeing the deeper levels of a situation because we are the only ones affected by it. For instance: White privilege, sexism, homophobia, racism — a truth to us, a myth to others. I am aware of the double standards of typical black beauty features. Everyone wants to be black but no one wants to be black. I just don’t think Kim Kardashian is even aware of the racial tension behind the shoot or her booty. I honestly don’t think she is aware of anything beyond her own reflection.

Black women should not care about Kim Kardashian’s big ass. Kim having a big ass does not take away from black women. Her butt does not represent us. Her butt has nothing to do with us. The mainstream world only warmed up to big booties this year because of fairer skinned celebrities. Maybe I’m jaded. Mainstream America will continue to celebrate us without us. I will continue to not be surprised. But to keep it short and on topic, Kim’s ass is not my problem.

What I find most interesting is that if it had been a black woman, let’s say Nicki Minaj, the conversation would be totally different. Nicki Minaj would definitely be shamed. We are very sensitive about our representation. We’re mad if it ain’t us, we’re even madder when it is.
